CHANGES WITH THE SEASON

Dear Dr.Bear,

My son is 3 years old and seems to have seasonal allergies. Last night he said his eyes were starting to itch and rubbed them. My husband and I tried to get him to stop, but to no avail. This morning he woke up looking as though he was punched in the eye. What can we do to treat this eye now? And how can we prevent it from happening again?

Sincerely,
Itchy Eyes

Dear Itchy Eyes,

You probably need visit to doctor, but cool compresses on the eyes and Benadryl by mouth can help. The next time he starts itching start the Benadryl ASAP. You may also need some anti-allergy eye drops, which your pediatrician can prescribe if the eyes are not now infected from rubbing or congestion. Be careful with the eyes, as it is very easy to scratch cornea, with constant itching.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bear
