TOO SOON TO STAND?

Dear Dr.Bear,

My daughter just turned 5 months today.  It seems like from day one, she has enjoyed flexing her leg muscles and standing up on her own.  She can support her own weight as long as she has some balance.  I have heard not to allow your baby's to stand too long, or too early, because this can cause bow leggedness.  Is this true?  And if so, how much is too much time on her legs?  She likes standing in your lap, and likes to play in the graco jumper toy, and spend limited time in the exersaucer.  My husband likes to stand her on the floor and let her balance herself on our ottoman. Is this good exercise for her, or just too much pressure, too early?

Sincerely,
Conerned Mom

Dear Concerned,

"Standing at a young aged leading to bow legs" is an old wifes tale

in fact the bones grow straighter the more weight put on the bone, that said you should be very careful with how much pressure you put on the joints...so holding her around the waist and letting her bear weight and flex her knees and ankles is the best thing to do.. be sure you talk to your doctor. he or she is the best source of information.

It sounds like her development is coming along nicely

Sincerely,
Dr. Bear
