WHOLE MILK CONCERN

Dear Dr.Bear,

Our question is about whole milk. Our daughter is going on 13 months and we are in the process of switching from formula to milk. Our doctor recommended whole milk because of the fat content and its importance to brain development. But it seems that she may have some lactose intolerance judging by the apparent stomach pains and flatulence. Is there an alternative?

Sincerely,
Ms. Milk

Dear Ms. Milk,
As I am sure you know, the gas (lactose sugar related) and allergy (protein) and milk fat source of fat intake are a contrived discussion stimulated by the dairy association. At her age, she never needs to ever have another drop of milk unless she craves it and then try Lactaide milk to satisfy her at the volume that will not cause gas, or you can try rice milk. The only thing in milk is water, protein, little fat (very little) and calcium. Give her 1000 mg Calcium ( 3 tums per day) or other source, water, and any other source of protein and you are home free. Re-discuss this with your doctor. I am sure he will be on your side.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bear
