HOW HIGH IS TOO HIGH

Dear Dr.Bear,

At what point should a fever be worrisom (no other symptoms are present) for a 5 1/2 year old?

Sincerely,
Concerned

Dear Concerned,

Much depends on exposure history, prior history of illnesses and responses by your child. You doctor and you know your child and family best. Some children have no symptoms and yeat have fever with strep throat or other occult illnesses. I would always check in with your physician if 102.5 or higher. Check with any prolonged fever even if lower, and immediately if symptoms or signs of illness occur. Some doctors believe that if fever ever responds to tylenol it helps them decide how serious the illness is, so be sure to tell the doctor what has been given and what the response was. The office can help you decide when to come based on your exposure history and doctors advise.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bear
