IMMUNIZATION CONCERN

Dear Dr.Bear,

My son was in for his four month wellness visit on Friday and received his immunization shots. Yesterday, we noticed the site of one of the shots was red and a small hard area could be felt beneath the red spot (about the size of a dime). Is this normal?

Sincerely,
Immunizations Concerns

Dear Immunizations Concerns,

This is not uncommon. I would suggest you put a warm compress on the spot and if it was to grow or not disappear in a few days to 2 weeks, bring him intot he office so that we can check to be sure that there is no local infection or vaccine specific reaction. He may have a lump at the site for several months - redness and tenderness should disappear.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bear
