MAN'S BEST FRIEND

Dear Dr.Bear,

Our daughter is 2 years old and we live in a wooded area. Our family dog needs flea and tick protection. I have bought two flea collars: One is Zodiac - its active ingredient is Carbaryl (CAS #63-25-2). The other is Hartz - its active ingredients are Tetrachlorvinphos (CAS #22248-79-9) and (s) Methoprene (CAS # 65733-16-6). Are either of these safe to use in the house with our daughter? The dog is in the house most of the day and sleeps in the adult's room, often on the bed.

Sincerely,
Flea-bitten

Dear Flea-bitten,
I do not know that either is unsafe, but sometimes the information lags behind the effects. I would check with your veterinarian and never let your daughter chew on the collar (that seems obvious). Let us know if you learn anything conclusive. My conservative nature is always to minimize any exposure, including aromas and chemicals, in closed and poorly ventilated areas. But remember that ticks and fleas carry lots of germs too which could lead to problems worse than the chemicals. Try to get more information from the vet.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bear
