WATER SAFETY

Dear Dr.Bear,

I am taking my 3 month old daughter to Florida for a family vacation. With the proper safety life preserver, is it okay for her to go boating with us? The boat is a pretty decent sized vessel. My daughter is a large baby -- she is over 24" and must now weigh more than the 15 pounds at her last visit.

Sincerely,
Water Baby

Dear Water Baby,

We always worry about babies and water. If she can stay below in a secure cabin and is in a life preserver, she should be fine. It is difficult to find the right size life preserver for a small infant, though. Babies do not always enjoy this kind of outing and can also get very sunburned, so we recommend considering a baby sitter back in your home or hotel! If you do take your baby boating, be sure to follow all safety precautions, keep your baby out of the sun, and never take your eye off the baby when underway. Have fun, but safety first!!

Sincerely,
Dr. Bear
