DAIRY PROBLEMS

Dear Dr.Bear,

I am a breastfeeding Mom of a three month old. He has had formula twice. Once at three weeks on a car trip and at the time I thought he threw up because of the trip. Then last week and he threw up again. Not just a spit up but a puddle both times. I had given him Similac advanced both times Can you give me any recommendations?

Sincerely,
Formula Frenzy

Dear Formula Frenzy,

Does he vomit water in the same volume? If not maybe you need to be more sure of the volume, and the burping techniques you are using when giving the Similac. It differs for formula and breast feeding. If you are sure the vomiting is only associated with the dairy based formula, you might want to try a more pure formula like Nutramigen. It should be well tolerated since it is synthetic, and has no cows’ protein. These are big questions. The response to each feeding change, and then deciding what to do, are often best answered by your doctor. Don't hesitate to ask for help. Our practice has direct voice mail for each provider, so that you can talk directly to your doctor and he can hear your voice and communicate back and forth about how you are doing. Don't hesitate to ask other questions until you feel satisfied that you have an answer, and let me know how things with the feeding changes are progressing.

Sincerely,
Dr. Bear
